The Golden Compass, by Philip Pullman
(His Dark Materials, Book One)

eviews of this and the other books in the series are coming soon. For now, here's a blog entry on the books I made before I began reading them.

January 3, 2006

A few weeks ago, after reading all the pre-movie hype about The Chronicles of Narnia, and hearing once again how radically anti-Christian Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials series was, I finally determined to read it. I wasn't enthused enough to buy the trilogy, so I headed to my local CCC Library home page and requested the books be sent to my local branch. Unfortunately, I didn't note how many copies of each they had until a week later, when one of the books arrived. The Amber Spyglass, the third book in the trilogy. Okay, whatever, it's book 3. I'm obviously not going to read that one first, but surely the other 2 will show up before I have to take this one back.

Or not. It's due back in 2 days, I can't renew it since it's got holds pending, and books 1 and 2 are still request pending. Here's a summary of the CCCLib's holdings:

  • Book One: The Golden Compass: 2 copies, both checked out, long waits on the hold list.

  • Book Two: The Subtle Knife: 3 copies, all checked out, long waits on the hold list.

  • Book Three: The Amber Spyglass: 41 copies, including 6 alone in the central branch.

Seriously, WTF? Why on earth would they have a total of 5 copies of the first two books in a trilogy, and then 41 of the third? Who reads the 3rd book first, or alone? How did this happen?
