Blog PBS show, The American Experience on right now, and it's about America's response to the Holocaust. The show is subtitled, "Deceit and Indifference", which pretty well removes any doubt as to the presentation. In the intro they relate that:
Photos of Nazi soldiers with rifles gunning down women holding their children. A proud American legacy. As well as discussing the very wide-spread anti-Semitism. Survey in 1942 of which groups were seen as the biggest threats to America listed Germans, Japanese, and Jews, in that order. As most Americans still had their heads up their asses, not even realizing the war in Europe would be something we'd have to bestir ourselves to assist with. German born citizens holding huge pro-Nazi rallies, massive anti-Semitism campaigns, blaming Jews for everything imaginable. Amazing the amount of businesses that wouldn't hire any Jews, and at the same time the nuts would go on about how Jews ran everything and had all the power. Uh huh. I can't even begin to imagine that. Picking up the paper one day and seeing that a couple million of people just like me were being slaughtered for no reason whatsoever. And I'd be with them if I happened to live there. I always wonder how these superstitions get started. Was it just that people were so Christian and still believed the "who killed Jesus" myths? Is it just that people always need a scapegoat? Depressing thing, human nature.
Golf has the dumbest rules of any sport. Article here. 2 guys got DQ'ed from the final round of the current tournament for absolutely nothing. One golfer had a shot plugged, so was entitled a drop. He was on a very steep hill, so his drop was certain to run into a sand trap, and if your drop does you are allowed to do it again, and if it fails twice you can place the ball. His first drop went into the bunker. His second drop was clearly rolling in, and his playing partner's caddy was there, and stopped the ball just short of the bunker, to save some time. So the golfer then placed the ball, and played on. Which would be legal if the guy had let the ball roll into the bunker, and then picked it up. But since he stopped it short, saving 20 seconds, it was illegal, and meant a two stroke penalty for both golfers, since the other guy's caddy stopped the ball. They didn't realize that until after their round when they signed their scorecards, which meant they had both cheated 2 strokes, and both got disqualified for it. Remember that next time someone says *insert sport here* has too many dumb rules.
Some humor. The Funny Times is a great magazine, I added it to the Links page yesterday in the humor section. Their online site doesn't have that much, but there are a few hilarious articles. Stories of worst first dates, and amusing newspaper corrections; corrections that required further correction:
Also added to the Links page a section on Blogs. It'll likely grow, but being as there are roughly two million blogs going now, including this one, it's not like I can ever hope to have a comprehensive links section. There are only two now that I view daily, and half a dozen other that I take a look at once or twice a week. dded a several links to the links page (funny how that works) including a section for blogs. There are half a dozen or so listed now, none of which I visit daily. |

Possibly the most disgusting news story you'll read this month can be seen here. Fire in a school in Saudi Arabia and some dozens of girls were burned to death, apparently due to locked doors to keep the genders from any mixing (god forbid), but even better, because the religious police were preventing the girls from leaving the school since they didn't have their proper doo rags on, and if they came out in the sun w/o their hair covered it would make baby Muhammed cry, or whatever. These SS fuck cops were actually beating the girls back into the flames, and stopping firemen from coming to rescue them. I suppose the Taliban enforcers were even worse, destroying museum art and thousand year old statues, not allowing music, etc, but it's hard to believe there are such superstitious fools still on this earth. And Saudi Arabia is supposedly our allies, and one of the more moderate of the muslim-ruled theocracy nations. Thank God America isn't run by religious kooks. (Well not completely, anyway.) The problem with religion is that if you really believe in whatever your personal version of it is, those Saudi cops were doing the right thing. Same way Christians kill native pagan populations, and care nothing about their lives as long as they are converted first. Anyone with common sense condemns that sort of thing, but if you really believe in your faith, you should support it. If going out of a burning building without your hair covered means you'll be damned to hell (or whatever), then it's better to die in the flames and go to heaven. Which is why any amount of war is justified by any religion, since it's only your religious state when you die that matters. Life is but a drop in the bucket compared to the eternity of afterlife. Fortunately hardly anyone is so superstitious as to really accept that imposed truth, or the world would be 5000x more violent than it already is.
Teacher has sex with blind student. I know it's wrong, and 11 is a bit young, (Okay, it's a lot young. He couldn't even be capable of orgasm and ejaculation by then, could he? I wasn't at that age.) but this is so clearly the best thing that's ever happened in the kid's life, and now the poor teacher gets busted. There seems to be a lot more coverage of older women banging boys of late; there was some teacher in the UK that did 3 of her students around 15 years of age. I sort of suspect that in the past this has just been overlooked, or nod and winked at by male cops, since being men, they don't see anything wrong with it, and know how much they would have loved that when they were boys. Perhaps since more women are in positions of authority they are the ones being upset and forcing prosecution? Most everyone seems to say, "lucky kids!" when they hear about this sort of thing. Which is an interesting double-standard, since when we hear about a girl of 14 or 15 or so and a male teacher in his 20's or 30's, the condemnation is almost complete, though every man is secretly thinking, "damn, lucky bastard!" My point on double standard is that in virtually every case the young boys are incredibly eager to do it and grateful for getting laid. Young boys and young girls have tons of sex, and young girls are very happy and eager to get laid with older men, in a lot of the situations it happens in. But adult women with boys get busted somewhat, while adult men with girls get all but electrocuted. There's never any consideration if the kid wanted it, enjoyed it, was actually hurt, etc. Being as kids aren't real difficult to manipulate or confuse or intimidate, I guess there can't be a whole lot of gray area, but at the same time if it's obvious the kid involved is mature and can think for themselves and has no objection to it, why make a big police deal about it? Often it's like a 17 y/o with a 23 y/o teacher's aide. People used to get married at 13 and 14, and still do in many countries. It's just stupid to pick some arbitrary age and say that one side is illegal and the other side isn't. Our judicial system isn't real well designed for intelligent, rational, discretionary decisions about this sort of thing, and one hysterical parent screaming to the media can ruin just about any cool, calm, logic anyway. |
