XTC
Nope, they are a pop band, one that's done about a dozen records but
never had any big hits in the US. They've had a couple sell in the
top 10 in the UK, but always had a style a few years too soon or too
late, and never had any one huge hit song everyone would remember.
They almost get a bonus point for lots of member changes and on stage
collapses, culminating in them refusing to tour anymore. But
that's not enough to warrant a bonus anything. They do get one for
being the only band ever to start with an "X" that's even
borderline famous enough to put on this page, thus saving me from the
embarrassment of having one empty letter. The name is brilliant. Yes, it's sort of too cute, XTC =
ecstasy, but it's not such a blatant verbal homonym that you're annoyed
by it. As I said above, this would be a great name for an
electronic band. I mean "ecstasy" the drug, the
semi-code letters, it has everything. It's less perfect for a pop
band, especially one from the 80's.
